LOCAL RADIO CLUB TO PARTICPATE IN THE ANNUAL ARRL FIELD DAY
On June 26 and June 27th, 2021

Crossville Tennessee’s local radio amateur club, is going to participate
in the annual Amateur Radio Relay Leagues (ARRL) field day.

Field day is a nationwide event that is used to test the ability of local radio amateurs to
communicate under emergency conditions that have resulted in the loss of commercial
power and regular communications via telephone and cellphones.

The local club consists of 87 members, and many of the members have extensive
training and education in radio electronics and emergency communications.

Remember this situation actually occurred here in February of 2015 when a massive
ice storm caused the loss of both cell towers and commercial power for much of the
county for several weeks. Our local club provided backup emergency communications
and radio communications at emergency shelters during that time.

The club will set up emergency radio equipment, erect temporary antennas
and install emergency generators to operate this equipment in the field
located just North of the Homestead Elementary school at the intersection of
US127 South and SR68. Voice, code and digital modes of communications will
all be used just like they would be in an actual emergency. Residents and local
government officials are all invited to stop by to see how emergency radio
communications operate and to obtain information on how they can become
licensed radio amateurs.

The local radio club has a 50 + year history here in Cumberland county. With the
counties population at 62,000 plus, and the club membership of 87 radio operator’s, we
are proud of being able to be of service when needed.
